As the sun sets on summer, many feel that the holidays are over, but October and November are some of the best months of the year to travel. It is the perfect time to escape into nature and discover Europe’s picturesque hidden gems outside of tourist season. Here are some of AM+A’s favourite ideas for an instagrammable autumn holiday courtesy of our European clients.

Experience the Golden Polish Autumn in Wrocław

Autumn is arguably the best season to plan your visit to Poland and experience the calming scenery of Złota Polska Jesień (Golden Polish Autumn). The season is brief and peaks in mid-October,  a weekend city break here therefore means you can feel crisp autumn air and see masses of golden leaves covering the scenery.

Located in the heart of Wrocław lies the Ogród Japoński Japanese Garden with its intricate Japanese styled bridges, ponds and plant species, perfect for an autumnal Instagram haven. Take in the renaissance style of the city with a walk surrounded by burnt coloured foliage, and explore the small cosy cafes and unique shops. If you prefer to explore historical buildings, the charming Old Town Square offers a perfect blend of historical Renaissance and Mannerist tenement buildings, whereas gothic architecture can be found littered throughout town. https://visitwroclaw.eu/en

If you’re looking for a European get-away to fully immerse yourself in tranquil nature and the changing of the seasons, Lake Bohinj, Slovenia, is a hidden gem full of picture-perfect sights. This surreal location is guaranteed to be as stunning in real life as it is on Instagram. Its massive mirror-like alpine lake is framed by forest greenery, and in autumn, the rustic colours are reflected in the lake to create autumnal art.

Due to the unspoilt nature, outdoor activities like hiking or kayaking in Lake Bohinj creates the ultimate setting for a fulfilling autumn adventure. Best of all, Lake Bohinj has several walking trails suited for all levels of hikers. If you prefer to climb to new heights, the viewpoints on Pršivec mountain give an incredible aerial view of the lake, and is the ideal spot to snap a stunning Instagram photo. https://www.slovenia.info/en/places-to-go/regions/alpine-slovenia/bohinj

If you’re still looking for some warmer summer temperatures, Portimaõ, the second largest city in the Algarve, provides 300 days of sunshine each year. Here you can enjoy everything from local wine samplings, take a tour of the vineyard and explore Portimaõ’s beautiful coastline while basking in the evening sun.

Portimaõ is also a perfect family-friendly destination as you can explore the traditional autumn fair, Feira de São Martinho, which returns for the 359th time this year from 4th to 13th November 2022. Taste one of the tempting autumnal treats like hot roasted chestnuts, pão com chouriço (chorizo filled bread) and farturas (long sugared cinnamon doughnuts), or the fairground rides. St Martin’s Fair provides a lit-up fairground backdrop for your inspirational autumn pictures without having to wrap up. https://www.visitportugal.com/en/destinos/algarve/73800

Try autumnal mushroom picking in Prague

The scenery of Prague itself is reason enough to visit this October or November; the misty, crisp morning air contrasts the autumn evening sun on the orange tiled roofs, and any trees and plants have turned burnt shades of red, orange and yellow. Stunning culture and architecture are abundant in the city- why not explore on foot with an autumn walk to see St. Charles Bridge or Prague Castle.

Get off the traditional city path and immerse yourself in the national tradition of mushroom picking. This is a favourite activity of many locals, and is a great way to spend time in unspoilt nature while becoming knowledgeable on lots of colourful fungi species. While you have to be extremely careful with preparation in learning which mushrooms are edible, forest foraging is a wholesome and fun activity which will embody the autumn season on your Instagram. https://www.visitczechrepublic.com/en-US/Destinations/Prague
